Wilkes Transportation Authority (WTA) is a Transportation Government Enterprise which answers to the same NC Local Government Commision as all NC Towns and Counties. WTA does not draw its revenue from the local county tax assessment nor is a part of the Wilkes County government. WTA is an independent organization dedicated to providing safe and reliable public transportation. WTA derives its funding from one NC State grant which supplements approximately 25% of its administrative costs. Approximately 80% of the NC State grant comes from the Federal Transportation Administration. All other revenue comes from fares and rates charged to its passengers, agencies and some local government offices.
